Northwind

1 number instead of four dashboards

Four teams reported four different acquisition numbers. Trace gave finance and marketing the same one.

Northwind sells a project tool to engineering teams. Marketing bought ads, ran a newsletter and sponsored two podcasts; sales closed the deals; finance recognised the revenue. Each of them had a number for how acquisition was going, and no two agreed.

The problem was the join, not the tracking

Nothing was untracked. Ads reported clicks, the newsletter reported opens, the CRM reported closed-won. What nobody had was the line connecting a click on a Tuesday to an invoice six weeks later, so every team estimated the middle and every estimate was different.

Trace replaced the estimate with a key. Every link Northwind publishes is minted through the API with a campaign tag, and the click ID it sets survives the trial, the sign-up and the upgrade.

The argument stopped the week the numbers matched. That was worth more to us than the reporting.

What changed

  • One acquisition number, reconciled to the general ledger every month
  • Two podcast sponsorships cut, one doubled, on evidence rather than instinct
  • Attribution reporting moved from four days a month to none

Northwind now runs its quarterly channel review off a single Trace view, projected in the room, with finance present.
